This weekend's lineup of in-store tastings and a three day sale on premium cigars & locally roasted coffee.
By Steve Siciliano
Four exceptional wines from southern Italy and an exclusive single barrel bourbon from Long Road Distillers are headlining our free in-store tastings this weekend. If that’s not enough to induce a visit to Siciliano’s Market over the next few days we’re tossing in sales on our extensive inventory of premium cigars and our locally roasted coffee. Let’s dive into the details.
Long Road bourbon tasting, Friday, February 28, 4 – 7 pm.* This exclusive 93 proof bourbon (63% corn, 17% rye, 13% wheat & 7% barley) was aged three years in new, medium-char oak barrels. The 750ml bottles are labeled with the Siciliano's Market logo and are retailing for $47.39.
The following are Siciliano's liquor buyer John Barecki's tasting notes: Nose: Dry cinnamon, caramel. slight mint, kettle corn, vanilla cream, lemon meringue, dried oak. Palate: Light butter scotch, hard candy, dried apricot, slight nuttiness, baking spice. Finish: Spicy, herbal, slight minerality.
Italian wine tasting, Saturday, February 29, 1 – 3 pm.* We’ll be featuring the following wines from southern Italy:
Rivera Preludio No. 1 Chardonnay, Castel del Monte 2015, $15.59, 750 ml bottle Produced by a family with deep roots in Puglian agriculture. Preludio No.1 is neutrally fermented in stainless steel tanks with additional aging in glass lined cement vats. Made from 100% Chardonnay from the Castel del Monte DOC, the wine showcases the vintner’s skill at producing white wines that retain lovely acidity and structure. The fruit is meticulously handled in the Corato family’s organically farmed vineyard and the wines are produced in their solar powered winery.
Brugnano V90 Rosso, Sicily 2016, $10.89, 750 ml bottle This is a fruit driven estate bottled wine from a family that has grown grapes on the northwest side of Sicily for generations. The Brugnano brothers make an affordable series of Sicilian wines called V90. This bottling is a beautiful rendition of the indigenous Nero d’Avola grape. Stainless steel fermented with no oak treatment. Rich in color with notes of ripe cherry and spices. An outstanding value.
Masseria Li veli Passemante, Apulia 2017, $15.59, 750 ml bottle. Made from 100% Negramaro, a grape indigenous to the heel of Italy. The wine shows notes of sour cherry and spicy red fruits. Elegant and smooth with soft tannins and a well-balanced acidity.
Pietradolce Etna Rosso, Sicily 2018, $24.89, 750 ml bottle. Pietradolce is a boutique winery that uses mostly pre-phylloxera vines that grow 2,950 feet above sea level on the northern slopes of Mount Etna. The wine is made from indigenous Nerello Mascalese grapes grown on the side of the active Sicilian volcano. Aged 3 months in French oak, this is a wine of complex and stunning minerality. Bouquet of berry fruit and brushwood.
